On a cold, snowy day like today I thought I’d share my favorite Homemade Bread recipe. There is nothing that smells better than a loaf (or two) rising and baking all afternoon.
2 Loaves – 4 Hours
- 2 cups milk
- 1 tbsp butter or margarine
- 7g pkg. active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 2 tsp salt
- Butter or margarine, softened
In a saucepan scald milk then stir in butter until melted. Cool until lukewarm. In a large bowl dissolve the yeast in the warm water then add the milk mixture, 3 cups of flour, sugar and salt. Beat until smooth. By hand, stir in enough remaining flour so that dough is easy to handle. Turn onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic. Grease a bowl and place the dough into it. Cover and let it rise until it is double in size (about 1 1/2 hours). When ready, punch dough and divide into 2. Shape into a loaf and place in greased loaf pans. Cover both pans and let the bread rise again until double in size (about 1 hour). Heat oven to 400°F (200°C) and then bake for about 25-35 minutes. Loaves should sound hollow when tapped.
Let cool, then serve and enjoy!
